Discover 4 Types of Massively Multiplayer Online Games

The computer gaming landscape has changed dramatically with the popularity of online gaming. While traditional games pitted the player against the computer, online games today allow gamers to interact with other players all over the world through the internet. Players are now able to form virtual teams to compete against or cooperate with each other.

There are essentially 4 kinds of massively multiplayer online games. This article examines the differences between them.

1) Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game (MMORPG)

This is the classic and perhaps most popular type of online multiplayer game with popular games including Ultima Online, Everquest and World of Warcraft. Gamers typically create a character that exists in a virtual world and are able to team up with other players to complete missions and even compete against each other. Along the way, players are able to improve their characters by acquiring in game items as well as through completion of game objectives.

Players of MMORPGs normally have to purchase and install the software on their home computers and pay monthly fees to connect to the online servers.

2) Massively Multiplayer Online Real Time Strategy (MMORTS)

These are real time strategy games played online with and against players from all over the world. Popular games in the genre include Shattered Galaxy and Defense of the Ancients.

3) Massively Multiplayer Online First Person Shooter (MMOFPS)

Remember running around in the first person perspective and killing Nazis and demons in Wolfenstein 3D and Doom? In MMOFPS games, you are able to interact with hundreds of people all over the world, teaming up and engaging in team combat with each other. You'll also be able to develop your character over the long term as you gain experience points from completed objectives. Games such as PlanetSide and World War II Online are popular in this category.

4) Browser Based Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Games (BBMMORPG)

These are the latest form of online role playing and are played through the web browser, taking away the need for frequent computer upgrades. Since no game clients are installed, they can also be played anywhere with an internet connection.
